Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical use of software applications and computer therapy practices in treatment programs for brain dysfunctional populations. Fifty-four facilities, In a tri-state area were chosen for the survey study. The primary objective of the survey was to identify those factors that are involved in choosing, implementing, and evaluating the use of computers and therapeutic software in direct client/patient rehabilitation processes. The survey revealed that computers are being used for assessment, remediation and instructional functions. The data indicated that the most common use for computers and software was for cognitive therapy. They are also being used as memory aids, communications systems for verbally and physically impaired individuals and as aids for the visually impaired. A further finding, was a considerable interest (on the part of rehabilitation professionals) In learning more about therapeutic computer applications. Some problems were apparent but it was also obvious that this new technology is being put to use in just about all clinical activities available to pediatric through geriatric populations. Computer programs offer assessment, remediation and instructional functions. And as software and hardware become more sophisticated It is apparent that rehabilitation programs will be modified and implemented in ways that address an individuals particular deficits, levels of abilities, and attention span.
