Description
Summary:An overview of the current status of land preservation activities in the US is presented. The government's role in acquiring lands for protection and preservation is then discussed. Several different options are discussed regarding how private individuals may contribute to land preservation efforts, such as land trusts, fee simple transfers, bargain sales, and covenants. The benefits and drawbacks of these diverse options are analyzed. Special attention is then given to conservation easements as a means of preserving and protecting ecologically valuable regions. The advantages gained through the utilization of conservation easements are examined. Difficulties encountered during efforts to use conservation easements are also evaluated.
